| "The timeless elegance
of The Prairie Style is recognized as one of the most important
architectural movements in residential design. The master architect
Frank Lloyd Wright pioneered this movement at the turn of the
century with a number of other architects who felt that the
form of homes in the Midwest should reflect the beauty of its
surrounding environment. It was in this idea that The Prairie
Style was born. We of the
middle west are living on the prairie. The prairie has a beauty
of its own, and we should recognize and accentuate this natural
beauty. It is quite level."
Frank Lloyd Wright 1908
Sweeping horizontal lines, wide open
floor plans and custom built ins with substantial fireplaces
using natural colors and materials are some of the most important
elements of The Prairie Style. It is in this distinctive style
that Widhalm Custom Homes presents The Prairie Stone, a one
of a kind custom home in the beautiful Waterford subdivision.
Like Wright, Widhalm Custom Homes insists
that his home appears to grow naturally from its surrounding.
Widhalm wants to create homes that are freed from the standard
“box” by studying the open plan with rooms that
flow and open out to each other.
The exterior of this beautiful homes
starts with its hard sweeping lines. The use of hand cut brick
shaped slate makes the home seem lower, longer and more attuned
to the earth. The external aesthetics also include a low pitched
roof , bands of horizontal casement windows, terrace walls
and planters that includes a space for indigenous growth,
and a unique three foot sloped and beveled overhang that help
accentuate the hard horizontal lines.
The wide entry opens up to a huge foyer
that leads you in though this wonderful plan. In the entry
you will find a solid walnut floor that runs through out the
main level and warm mission style oak trim with solid three
panel contemporary doors. You will find a large office just
off entry that offers a wonderful carpet from Moda that was
Designed by Proda, and a great view out of a five lite casement
over the entry planter outside that seems to bring the outside
in.
Further inside you will discover a
wonder hearth area that offers a fantastic view through a
green space that overlooks the Waterford lake. Inside this
expansive space with 18’ ceilings you will feel the
compression of the floating spider beams above. The fire place
offers warmth with its natural black flagstone hearth and
the use of the same slate outside provides a warm organic
element.
The media room is found three steps
down in a pitted area that is designed for privacy, but offers
a wonderful prairie style look with a band of windows that
surround the room just over head. Full surround sound is available
and a custom entertainment center would be designed to meet
the specific needs of the homeowner.
Elegance best describes the kitchen,
dinette and centralized dinning area. The kitchen is loaded
with the best of every modern convenience with all quartz
countertops, stainless appliances, and a curved glass hood
located in the center wall. The mission style cabinets are
a warm color and made out of solid oak and there is a lit
glass display in the focus area. Other features include a
tiered island with a lit soffit above, a full slate back splash
that runs to the ceiling, and a unique symmetry that Widhalm
Custom Homes is noted for.
In the large centralized dinning room
there are floor to ceiling windows that look out over another
planter that is part of the terraced patio. You will also
find a lit box vault and a unique planter located in the corner
again bringing the outside in.
Up the wide staircase to the second
level there is a one of a kind layered hand rail that was
designed by Widhalm to reflect the true prairie style of this
home. Upstairs there are four beds and three baths. The large
master bedroom features a ten- foot ceiling, a sitting area
and a gorgeous master bathroom spa. This master bathroom features
a full waterfall slate back splash, his and hers décor
sinks on a floating vanity, a large full tile walk in shower,
and a secluded 42” x 72” whirlpool bath. There
are also two large walk in closets and a third entry closet
in the master bedroom space.
In the other bedrooms you will find
box seats, and a jack and jill bath room. The fourth has it
own bathroom that could be used as a guest suite.
